Sir: Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams announced on television in America that he was now ready 'to go the extra mile' in the quest for peace. The full quotation comes from the Sermon on the Mount and appears at Matthew 5: 41 - 'If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.' This was a reference to the Roman army of occupation's practice of forcing civilians to carry heavy packs for them.
It would certainly prove to be a refreshing change of policy on the part of Sinn Fein were they to adopt such advice instead of the failed philosophy of the past 25 years.
Yours faithfully,
