Sir: It is no less than tragic that someone occupying such an influential position as Madsen Pirie should write a whole article on the possible decline of rail traffic through the current strikes without devoting a single sentence to the environmental effect of such a development.
He speaks blithely of the sadness that such a decline would cause those who enjoy rail travel, and of specialised fast routes into cities for heavy traffic made from paving over rail tracks. But where is the recognition of the environmental or pollutive effect of such a development? Nowhere.
