Not only is the shadow chancellor's sportsmanship currently being called into question, but according to the New Statesman, he's facing pressure from both sides at work.
Perhaps he has a plan, writes Rafael Behr: "Balls will have noticed that the Tories are not as popular with the business community as they would like to be. When that support - and the economic credibility that it brings - is up from grabs, why risk frightening everyone with loose talk of re-engineering the whole of capitalism?"
