From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Ahead of tonight's ITV 1 documentary Exposure:The Other Side of Jimmy Savile, which will focus on the late presenter's alleged abuse of young girls, further appalling stories have come to light.

In the Daily Mail a woman, now 65, says that she became pregnant after Savile lured her to his hotel room with the promise of a gift from her favourite singer Elvis, then raped her, when she was aged just 16. "I said 'stop, stop'. He was trying to encourage me not to struggle and saying, 'you’re an angel'. I wanted to shout but I was too embarrassed. I didn’t want anyone to know what was happening."

The documentary will air an interview from 2009 in which Savile defends paedophile pop star Gary Glitter, who was convicted of downloading pornographic images of children as young as two in 1999. Savile takes the view that, since Glitter was not selling on the images, and used them simply for his own "gratification", his crime was blown out of proportion by the press. "Gary has not sold 'em, has not tried to sell 'em, not tried to show them in public or anything like that."

A woman has claimed she saw Savile and Glitter both abusing under-age girls at the BBC Television centre.

Louis Theroux, who made a film about the TV presenter in 2000, tweeted "Very strange about Savile. Still struggling to get my head round it."

A Glasgow children's swimming pool has removed a life-size statue of Savile from its site.

Exposure airs tonight at 11.10 p.m.
