How to read The Independent Daily Edition on Android
Letter from the editor: Several readers wrote in after last week’s column, which sang the praises of our iPad app
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Traditionally, there has been a Church and State division between the editorial and commercial divisions of newspapers. So I’m very wary of giving over this column, which being on Page 3 of our Saturday print edition is prime editorial real estate, to advertise a product – especially because I did that last week, too. But then given that the products I’m advertising are our tablet editions, and that I am mustard keen for you to realise that the spirit and quality of The Independent lives on there, I hope I’m not going to try your patience too much if I briefly mention our Android app.
Several readers wrote in after last week’s column, which sang the praises of our iPad app, to ask if The Independent will be available on Android (which is Google’s operating system). So to the likes of Leila Dawson in Ross-on-Wye and James Shepherd in I’m-not-sure-where (but thanks for the email), the answer is: yes, The Independent Daily Edition is available on Android, too – and also on Kindle Fire.
The Kindle e-reader edition will continue to be published, with the same content as the Daily Edition app; and for those without a mobile or tablet device the Independent Daily Edition can be read via a browser on any PC or laptop at edition.independent.co.uk
To the likes of Tony Pateman in Welwyn, thank you for the gentle upbraiding you gave me for failing to mention the Android here last week. And to the likes of Keith Wilkinson in east London, I take on board your points, will pass them on, and guarantee to do all we can to keep making it better.
For those of you who missed last week, or have a faint interest in subscribing to The Independent Daily Edition, all the information you need is at independentsubscriptions.co.uk – and if you have any queries, please email appsupport@independent.co.uk and I promise our team will do their utmost to get back to you promptly. The response to our tablet edition from loyal readers has been very positive.
Alternatively, for the many of you who have no interest whatsoever in reading The Independent on tablet, perhaps because you live in rural areas with limited connectivity (thanks, among others, to Trevor Londesborough in Yorkshire and Patrick Cosgrove in Shropshire for polite reminders about this fact of modern life), well, I’m sorry to put you through all this promotion. You probably didn’t appreciate our cover wrap or advert in the newspaper this week (and there’s a couple more next week), but please be assured that my aim is to get as many of you reading The Independent for as long as possible.
Talking of which, Tracy Chevalier on Othello ain’t half bad, as one of my old editors used to say. Have a great weekend.
