An invitation from the editor to secure the Final Say referendum you deserve
For all our futures, for our democracy and for the process of uniting the (dis)United Kingdom again, let’s come together to block a majority and settle Brexit properly
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Are you convinced yet that Boris Johnson’s deal is the ideal way to end Brexit? No, me neither… That’s why we’re inviting you to a free special event this Friday to work out together how we secure a Final Say.
This general election was – according to the prime minister – meant to be all about the B-word. More specifically about “getting it done”. Easy to say, but the reality has proved to be somewhat different.
And one thing’s for sure: regardless of what Mr Johnson says, there is no deal that can make Brexit go away by 31 January. There’s the small matter of the trade deal to get through first.
All kinds of issues are rolling in – as well they should during a general election campaign (the word “general” is a bit of a giveaway that these are not single-issue political moments). Climate, terrorism, the health service – we need all of these issues to be discussed. But we also still need a proper way to settle the issue of Brexit, not least because it is fundamental to all the other concerns of voters.
So here at The Independent we believe – more than ever – that a Final Say referendum is vital for all our futures, for our democracy and for the process of uniting the (dis)United Kingdom again.
And the truth is that it’s not too late to secure a Final Say. The Liberal Democrats, Labour, SNP and Plaid Cymru would all demand a Final Say to work with any minority government, so tactical voting is more important than ever. Block a clear majority and we get to settle Brexit properly.
Want to know more? Come and meet Michael Heseltine, and a host of other political heavyweights, at a rally organised by The Independent in conjunction with a group of pro-referendum organisations. The event is called Together for a Final Say – and that’s what we believe, that if enough people who feel passionately about the need for a referendum can act together, we can still win a Final Say for everyone.
The event takes place in Westminster on Friday evening at 4pm until 6pm. Click here for full details and for your free ticket.
Whatever your view on Brexit, help us to win the ending that puts democracy first.
