Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

THERE may still be 12 shopping days until Christmas, but there are only five voting days left in the Independent on Sunday's poll for Man, Woman and Villain of the Year. Our second annual poll, launched last week, invited readers to nominate the people they felt had made the biggest impact in 1998 - for good and ill. The response has been huge, and there is still time to submit an entry, using the coupon alongside, or by sending an e-mail to people@independent.co.uk. Deadline for entries is noon next Thursday, 17 December, and we shall publish the results in next Sunday's paper.

Will Mo Mowlam repeat her success of 1997, in which she was named Woman of the Year ahead of Clare Short and Cherie Blair? How will Tony Blair - last year's Man of the Year and fifth in the villains' list - fare? And who's going to win the battle of the villains? Don't miss the opportunity to influence the outcome - and win a prize. Ten entries will be selected at random, with the senders each receiving a bottle of champagne.
