Here's how you can ask your MP to consider lending support to giving everyone, no matter what side of the debate they're on, a Final Say

Chuka Umunna column: Why I support the Independent's plan to back a second referendum

Now that summer recess has officially begun, and MPs have returned to their constituencies, there’s no chance like the present for you to appeal to your local MP about the importance of having your say on an increasingly likely no-deal Brexit.

As we have seen in the past few weeks, if Britain were to crash out of the European Union, the country would be in a grave position. The civil service is preparing for food shortages, medicine shortages and fuel shortages. And a hard Brexit would reduce our GDP by 8 per cent, according to The Sunday Times. This is all in spite of the fact that there is no majority in the House of Commons for a no-deal Brexit, yet, it’s precisely where we are headed under Theresa May.

We believe in giving the people - both Remainers and Leavers - the chance to have a Final Say on Brexit for three important reasons:

  1. The people, on both sides of the debate, are losing faith with the current process. From Theresa May to Parliament as a whole, a chaotic approach has delivered infighting, resignations and party politics, but little progress on the key issues that people care about.
  2. The people on both sides should have the chance to finish what they started. With reality coming into focus, it’s only natural to check this future is what people really want. After years of negotiations behind closed doors, the people must not be shut out of the final decision.
  3. The people – on both sides – know so much more now than we did in 2016. The campaigns – again, on both sides – were flawed and clouded by misinformation. Many myths have been exposed. Now we must check there is support for the facts of Brexit.

The government has had two years to articulate its vision of a prosperous post-Brexit future, but it has produced nothing. MPs must give the decision back to the people.

Contact your MP and tell them to represent you by sending a version of this letter to them:

Dear XXX

I am writing to you today as I am concerned about the direction of this country and the ability of the government to deliver the Brexit it promised two years ago.

The government has always insisted that it is implementing the “will of the people” by negotiating “the best possible deal for Britain and for Europe”.

Having seen that a majority of the public now support a Final Say referendum, and that the possibility of a no-deal is growing ever larger, I can no longer in good faith believe this.

As my local MP, I hope that you are able to put party politics aside, and work for the interests of our local community and our country. A no-deal Brexit would have a devastating impact on jobs, peoples’ livelihoods and the economy. Therefore, I urge you to support The Independent’s campaign for the public to have a Final Say on the Brexit deal.

This is not an attempt to reopen the divides between Remainers and Leavers, but to restore the public’s faith in democracy and allow the people to finish what they started.

It is time to accept that the government’s bluff has failed: Britain should not have to choose between a no deal and a bad deal. We need a Final Say.

Yours Sincerely,

XXX
