Nike may be the world's biggest manufacturer of sports shoes but the woman who designed its logo – the celebrated tick known as a Swoosh – was paid in the firm's infancy just $35 (£20) for designing it. Kimbra Hickey knows just how she feels. Ms Hickey is the owner of the pair of hands which were photographed, holding a red apple, on the cover of the cult teenage vampire novel Twilight which has sold 100 million copies worldwide.
Now Ms Hickey, a "hand model", has begun complaining that she has not had her just deserts for her role in the success of the novel and its sequels. She wants a part in the next Twilight movie (the last grossed $400m) in recompense. The novel's publishers thought she was joking at first, but she is pressing her suit. She is goofy enough to succeed. After all, the woman who drew the Swoosh, a graphic design student called Carolyn Davidson, was later presented by Nike with a diamond Swoosh ring and an envelope filled with Nike shares to express the firm's belated gratitude.
The publishers of Twilight must just be hoping that they don't now get a call from the farmer who grew the apple.
