From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Writing on her own website, Christine Hamilton, wife of the disgraced former Tory MP Neil Hamilton, once spoke of her relief at leaving the dull world of Westminster behind her for the pleasures of starring on shows like Celebrity Masterchef.

She – and Neil too, presumably – were “thrilled to have left the artificial world of boring old politics for the madcap fun world of the media and entertainment,” she wrote.

Not thrilled for all that long it appears, because, as we report today, both Hamiltons could be in line to stand for Ukip in the 2014 European elections, with Neil topping the party list, virtually guaranteeing him a seat.

There is no stopping the Hamiltons who, like the monarchy, go on and on. Whether the presence of either of them in Brussels will do much to support Nigel Farage's claim that Ukip is now "a serious force in politics" is debatable.
