Your support helps us to tell the story

This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Help us keep bring these critical stories to light. Your support makes all the difference.

It is the curse of show business. There is always someone younger and prettier than you ready to take your place. Sarah Jessica Parker, who has been dropped by Gap's advertising campaign in favour of 17-year-old Joss Stone, is only the latest star to discover this.

But Ms Parker should be glad. To be dropped for a younger model is an opportunity to demonstrate good grace and dignity in an industry not especially known for either of those qualities. We say: good luck to life's more mature models. And let them take comfort in the fact that, as Goethe put it, "If youth is a fault, it is one soon corrected".
