Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. As David Cameron has vowed that legislation will pass allowing same-sex marriage will be passed before the general election in 2015, George Osborne has vowed to defy the majority of his party and vote in favour of allowing same-sex couples to marry in church.
The Chancellor said that it was the Conservative way to believe in commitment, and that:
“I am a supporter of it, I will be voting for it when it comes to the House of Commons, but it will be a free vote issue – in other words every MP will vote according to their conscience – and I will vote according to my conscience in favour of gay marriage.”
A poll of local Conservative chairman showed that 71 per cent oppose the plans, but here at Independent Voices we disagree, and have been running a campaign for same-sex marriage to be legalised in the UK.
Many have signed the petition, and Richard Branson, Father Ian Stubbs and Anna Friel have also been vocal in their support of the campaign.
