Dr Finella Craig: 'It's so hard for families to see their child in pain'
The world-class palliative care centre is dedicated to providing emotional and medical support to terminally ill children
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Dr Finella Craig works in the Louis Dundas Centre for Children's Palliative Care - GOSH's world-class centre dedicated to research, teaching and care for children with life-limiting illnesses.
The LDC is named in honour of a Louis Dundas, a four-year-old boy who died in “unspeakable pain” after suffering a brain tumour in April 2008.
Its aim is to ensure that no one, let alone a four-year-old, suffers unnecessarily in their final days.
“One of the worst experiences for a family is to witness their child in pain and discomfort, and for them to feel totally powerless to do anything about it,” said Dr Craig, a consultant in Paediatric Palliative Medicine at GOSH since 2002.
“Our role is to try to manage the child’s pain and symptoms to enable the child to live as well and comfortably as possible. Even in modern times, this can be a huge challenge.”
