Groningen fans throw smoke bombs and invade pitch in protest of first relegation in 25 years
Groningen fans protested about their side’s first relegation in 25 years by repeatedly throwing smoke bombs on the pitch, with one fan invading the pitch, in their match against Ajax on Sunday 14 May.
The referee has no choice but to abandon the match.
Groningen’s relegation was confirmed last Sunday as they drew 1-1 at Go Ahead Eagles.
The side has a record of four wins, 21 losses and six draws with three matches left in the Eredivisie and is 17th in the 18-team league.
Groningen vs Ajax will be replayed on Tuesday.
