Caroline Lucas rips up copy of Illegal Migration Bill during impassioned Commons speech

Caroline Lucas ripped up a copy of the Illegal Migration Bill in an emotional speech in the House of Commons.

The Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion called the government's plans to stop small boats crossing the English Channel an "illegal and immoral bill, which has no place on our statute book" before tearing a piece of paper.

Under the policy, those who arrive in the UK illegally will be detained and "promptly removed, either to their home country or a safe third country," and will not be able to return or claim British citizenship.
