First openly transgender woman in Olympic history fails to register lift in women’s weightlifting final

Laurel Hubbard made Olympic history even if she didn’t manage to finish on the podium in the Tokyo Olympic women’s weightlifting final on Monday (2 August).

Hubbard became the first openly transgender woman in Olympic history to compete in the Games – and will go down in the record books regardless of her performance in the event.

The New Zealander failed to register a clean lift in three attempts, meaning she was ruled out of any potential medal contention as some had expected.
