King and Queen treated to Shakespeare performances to mark 400th anniversary of first printed plays
The King and Queen watched moving performances from Shakespeare’s plays as they marked the 400th anniversary of the first printed edition of the playwright’s work.
Charles and Camilla, accompanied by guests at Windsor Castle, were treated to extracts from famous scenes.
Dame Judi Dench, Helena Bonham Carter, Vanessa Redgrave and her daughter Joely Richardson, and David Oyelowo were among the audience.
Performers later joked they were more nervous of “acting royalty” in the audience than the King and his wife.
Celebrations are being held to mark the anniversary of the publication of the First Folio in 1623, which is considered one of the most influential books ever written in the English language.
