Wearing cycle helmets should not be compulsory, Stanley Johnson says

Stanley Johnson has slammed the possibility of making cycle safety gear compulsory to wear on Britain’s roads.

The former MEP cited 1500s Elizabethan sumptuary laws, which dictated what clothes people of different social statuses could wear, as he rallied against the mandatory wearing of helmets and hi-vis jackets.

His comments on Good Morning Britain came after Channel 5 presenter Dan Walker cited his cycle helmet as “saving his life” when he was hit by a car while cycling in Sheffield.

“You can’t run everything on the basis of health and safety,” Mr Johnson said.
