Elon Musk joins experts warning ‘out of control’ AI advances could pose ‘profound risks’

Elon Musk has joined more than 1,000 of the world’s leading tech industry figures and academics - as well as the head of the Doomsday Clock - to warn “out of control” artificial intelligence advances could quickly become a “profound risk to society and humanity”.

In an open letter, experts have called for an immediate pause on the creation of “giant” AIs for at least six months, so the capabilities and dangers of systems can be properly studied and mitigated.

“Recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control,” the letter says.
