World’s largest release of seahorses completed in Sydney Harbour
The world’s largest release of seahorses has been completed in Sydney Harbour, scientists say.
Hundreds of baby seahorses were released with tags so researchers can monitor their survival in the wild.
Footage from New South Wales Department Of Primary Industries senior research scientist Dr David Harasti shows 380 juvenile endangered White’s seahorses swimming in Chowder Bay.
The species was declared endangered in 2020 due to habitat loss and pollution.
Scuba divers in the area have been encouraged to keep an eye out for the babies and submit photographs of sightings to the Sydney Seahorse Project.
