Spice Girls star Melanie Chisholm was shocked as her episode of the BBC's Who Do You Think You Are? unearthed a criminal past in her family.

The singer, 50, travelled to Bristol to discover more about her four times great grandfather, who worked his way up from being an orphan in a workhouse to an insurance manager in the 19th century.

Mel C appeared gobsmacked as insurance historian James Kneal told her what happened to her ancestor, as revealed in an old copy of the Bristol Daily Post.
