Feel more: five fantastic destinations for outdoor adventurers
With Wizz, the great outdoors awaits with these five postcard-perfect European holiday ideas
Adventure is right on your doorstep: some of Europe's most beautiful destinations are easily accessible via WIZZ from London Luton. Here are five ideas for an outdoors adventure to treasure...
Bergen: Mount Fløyen
Nothing will help you get your bearings (and get the adrenaline pumping) like a good hike. When you get to Bergen, make it your mission to trek up the gorgeous Mount Fløyen – the trail starts right in the middle of the city, and it’s an easy enough journey up to the top. When you’re up there, you’re rewarded with killer views of the city (as well as all those endorphins). If you don’t fancy the walk, you can catch the funicular – there are lovely walking trails when you get to the top, too.
Gdansk: go kayaking at Sobieszewo Island
Fancy a real adventure? It’s not one for beginners, but you can kayak from the centre of Gdańsk out to the beautiful Sobieszewo Island. The journey is around 10 miles, but the island is well worth it, with sandy beaches and plenty of bird life. If you want something a little less strenuous, stick to Gdańsk itself, and take a kayak around the city’s islands with a guide, or head out at sunset to drink in the views as they’re bathed in the glow of dusk. Make life easier by going with a guide from Gdańsk Zkajaka (gdanskzkajaka.pl).
Larnaca: dive to the Zenobia Wreck
Gaze around the dazzling blue sea that surrounds Larnaca, and you’ll be overcome with the urge to dive right in. Luckily for you, these waters are a diver’s paradise. Frequently listed as one of the top diving spots in the world, the wreck of the MS Zenobia lies about a mile away from Larnaca, and is a dream for scuba fans. The wreckage itself would be an impressive enough sight (there are 135 articulated lorries still on the ship) but the marine life is incredible – you can see turtles, barracuda and triggerfish. Don’t fancy diving? Take a dip at the Larnaca Amphorae Snorkelling Park instead.

Sofia: hike the Vitosha Mountain
Technically a ski resort, Vitosha is also a dream for hikers in the warmer months. Buses take you from the city centre right to the ski lifts, that’ll bring you to the top of the mountain and some excellent trails. You can choose from tougher treks or gentler paths, and you can even tackle some of them in the winter months too – just swap the hiking boots for snow shoes and you’re ready to go. The panorama from the top is well worth the effort.
Tromsø: go dog sledding
If you’re heading to Tromsø, then heading out with the huskies should be right at the top of your agenda. An adventure with these beautiful creatures is a pure adrenaline rush, and will take you through the breathtaking landscape that’s just a short hop from the city. You’ll head out with experienced mushers, all wrapped up in cosy thermals, and lean back in the sled as the herd of huskies race you over the snow. Pick a place like Tromsø Villmarksenter (villmarkssenter.no) and you can meet all the dogs (and puppies) afterwards, or choose an excursion that incorporates the Northern Lights or midnight sun.
