Reykjavik: cosy up at Stofan Kaffihús

If ever there was a city that calls out for a cosy little café, it’s Reykjavik. And this is a place that does snug little hideaways to perfection. Wander down the streets lined with wooden buildings, and you’ll find yourself peeking through windows into cafés filled with people congregating over steaming cups of coffee and treats. Stofan Kaffihús (facebook.com/stofan.cafe) is one of the city’s finest. With exposed woodwork, overstuffed couches and crochet wall hangings, you can plonk yourself down with a glass of wine and a crêpe until you’re ready to get up and explore the city once more.

Bari: eat at the seafood market

Is there anything better than fresh seafood, whipped straight off the fishing boat and served up right in front of you? At Bari’s seafood market (look for “Nderr alla Lanze” on the map), you can enjoy the best of the day’s haul with the scent of the sea in the air. You’ll get to watch the fishermen at work, whether they’re lugging in baskets of sea urchins or battling with octopus. And it’s a bargain, too – you can get a really good feed for around €5, and an icy cold bottle of Italian beer on the side for around €1.

Kutaisi: enjoy local dishes at Palaty

There’s nothing quite like Georgian cuisine – salty sulguni cheese, minty spinach pkhali, bean stuffed lobiani bread – all with a little chacha brandy on the side. You can indulge in all of it in Palaty (facebook.com/palatyrestaurant), a cute restaurant with a snug, vintage feel. The menu isn’t exclusively Georgian, but you can get a Lechkhumian board, stuffed with all the classics like smoked pork, Imeretian cheese, potted beans, ojakhuri and pickles. You might even have a bit of live piano music tinkling in the background.

Prague: eat a trdelník in the Good Food Bakery

Walk around the pretty town squares in Prague, and you’ll likely be met with an intoxicating scent in the air. Trdelníks are a spiralled pastry, made by wrapping dough around a stick, cooking it (traditionally over an open fire) and sprinkling with sugar and nuts. If you want something a bit more modern, head to the Good Food Bakery (goodfoodchimney.com), where the trdelník has been updated for the Instagram age. Here, you’ll find these cones made with unusual ingredients like activated charcoal and coconut, and filled with ice cream. Traditional? No. Delicious? Oh yes.

Vienna: grab some treats at the Felzl bakery

There’s nothing quite like the smell of a good bakery. And if you follow your nose in Vienna, it’ll likely take you to Felzl (felzl.at), a spot that’s made the humble bakery cool. You’ll find stacks of warm, crusty baguettes, pastries filled with pecorino cheese, arugula and fig mustard, and handcrafted sourdough loaves. But what’s really great is that if you get a hankering for some decent bread after hours, you can indulge your cravings thanks to their very own bread vending machine. Stocked up each night at 8pm, the “brotautomat” is the answer to all your midnight snack related dreams.
