Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Court trouble on the Continent? Travel without a passport. Although the Schengen "Europe without frontiers" agreement has eliminated frontiers between France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the three Benelux countries, the UK Passport Agency warns that the treaty does not remove the need for travellers within the Schengen area to carry suitable ID. British visitors must produce a passport on demand.

See Docklands and Eindhoven? Book a flight on Denim Air (00 31 40 257 0873, or through travel agents), which begins services on Friday from London City airport to Eindhoven. The full economy fare is pounds 301 return (including tax), but a pounds 128 fare is available if you fix your dates and stay a minimum of two nights or a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night.

Find a dozen different ways to leave Manhattan?

Dial 1-800-55 FERRY in New York City for schedules and fares of the Hoboken, Staten Island and other ferries from Manhattan. From the UK, add 00 - but note that you will have to pay for the call, unlike in the US.

Travel one-way to Amsterdam for pounds 40? Book a flight from Luton with EasyJet (01582 445566). Scheduled flights begin tomorrow. In line with the carrier's pricing policy, the fare is between pounds 35 and pounds 65 each way, plus pounds 5 tax on outbound flights, pounds 4.20 inbound.

Enjoy the Dutch city once you arrive? Read Anna Rockall's budget guide to Amsterdam in the Independent this Saturday.
