Follow the oolitic limestone belt? Set out on the new Macmillan Way between Oakham in Rutland and Abbotsbury in Dorset, which follows the belt of limestone that is known as Cotswold stone in its central section. This 235-mile path is named after the Cancer Relief Macmillan Fund. It officially opens on 25 April, but the guidebook is published this week: pounds 5.99 from bookshops, or pounds 6.50 (made payable to Macmillan Way Association) including postage from Peter Titchmarsh, St Mary's Barn, Pillerton Priors, Warwick CV35 0PG.

See the Canadian Rockies by train? Take the new, thrice-weekly Skeena service between Jasper in Alberta and Prince Rupert in British Columbia, beginning on 15 May. To maximise the scenic potential, it will cover the distance over two days, stopping for the night in Prince George. The one- way fare is around pounds 110, including in-train meals but excluding accommodation in Prince George.

Glide along to the International Helicopter Museum, near Weston-super- Mare in Somerset. On 23 and 24 March, guides will be taking visitors behind the scenes. The museum is open 10am-4pm daily in March, and admission is pounds 3.

Go underground? Visit the Dan-yr-Ogof caves at Abercraf in the Upper Swansea Valley (01639 730284). This is the largest caving complex accessible to the public in Europe.
