Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Afford a long-distance train ride in Germany? Travel at weekends, when a group of up to five people can go anywhere in Germany for a total of DM35 (about pounds 16). The ticket is restricted to slower regional trains, and is not valid on InterCity services. During the rest of the week, use the Guten Abend ticket, which allows unlimited travel between 7pm and 2am for DM59 (pounds 28). If you travel on an ICE express, you pay an additional DM10. A supplement of DM15 applies on Fridays and Sundays. Call the German Rail information line on 0181-390 8833.
Ditto in Holland? Pack it all in to a day. The price for a day return ticket anywhere in Holland flattens out after 210km (130 miles), which means you can go anywhere you like and back for 67.50 guilders - about pounds 23. So you could travel from Amsterdam to Maastricht or the Hague to Groningen for this amount.
Fly over Cambridge? There are several options. Classic Wings (01255 424671) offers flights over the city in a 1934 Dragon Rapide. At 11.15am on summer Saturdays and Sundays, the biplane takes off from Duxford air museum to fly at 1,500 feet over Cambridge, Ely and Newmarket. The half- hour trip costs pounds 69.50 including admission to Duxford and a pre-flight snack.
