London

Classical music comes out into the open in the historic surroundings of the gardens of Hampton Court. The Hampton Court Palace Festival line- up features Nigel Kennedy who will be creating a purple haze with his Hendrix: Concerto in Suite Form. Tenor Jose Carreras will be making his only 1998 UK appearance, and for raving nationalists there will be a night of patriotic classical hits including, of course, Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance.

12 June

Berlin (right)

Continuing the 50th-anniversary commemorations of the Allied airlifts to Berlin, the exhibition The Construction of Tegel Airport opens, documenting the period of the Berlin Blockade and the airlift in the former French sector. The exhibition runs to 1 November 1998, and the emphasis will be on the construction of the airport within a period of only three months and its use until August 1949, featuring previously unpublished photos. Contact: Heimatmuseum Reinickendorf, Alt-Hermsdorf 35, 13467 Berlin, Mon- Sun 10am-6pm, closed on public holidays.

Philippines

Today is Philippine Independence Day, marking one hundred years of separation from their former Spanish rulers. The day will be marked by celebrations in the capital Manila and across the islands, including cultural events, military displays for the more light-hearted, and firework displays.

13 - 14 June

New York

The Guinness Fleadh Festival of Irish music hits New York. Artists taking part include Sinead O'Connor, Nanci Griffiths and Chumba-whumba. Join the throng on Randall's Island between 11am and 11pm on both days.
