Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.City life can be extremely hectic, so finding the time to relax and spend quality time with someone special can be difficult.
However, couples who want to escape frenetic city life for somewhere more tranquil this autumn can find just the space they’ve been seeking - and the joy of each other’s company - on a long weekend in Jersey.
The largest of the Channel Islands is ideal for an island break where you can focus on romance – on delicious food, lovely scenery, fresh air and the pleasure of a few days together. Not only does Jersey offer all these options in abundance, but it sits a short hop away by air, within sight of the French coast, a mere 40 minutes by plane from London.
City-dwellers will discover many places where they can slow down, stop and reconnect with each other. Samarès Manor is a case in point – a medieval manor house in the parish of St Clement, in the south-east of the island.
Dating to the 11th century, it has delightful botanic gardens created in the Twenties by millionaire ship owner Sir James Knott, and offers the perfect place to wander amid exotic species and floral beauty.
Just as historic, meanwhile, is Mont Orgueil Castle, the dramatic fortress in Gorey, on the east coast of the island, where you can clamber up to the ramparts for dreamy views of the Normandy shoreline, just 14 miles away.
Of course, a romantic weekend away should also involve dinner. Jersey is increasingly known for the quality of its cuisine, and restaurants which serve only the freshest of local and seasonal produce.
Ormer, in the capital St Helier, is especially respected - a Michelin-starred eatery where you can dine on superb seafood prepared by star chef Shaun Rankin.
And what about somewhere to stay? Visitors can soothe away their cares at L'Horizon Beach Hotel, on St Brelade’s Bay in the south-west of Jersey, where massage treatments and the chance to switch off are an enticing possibility.
Then there is the fabulous five-star treat that is Longueville Manor – a lovingly restored manor house, just outside St Helier, where 30 wonderfully designed bedrooms and suites proffer an inviting setting for quiet relaxation.
From candlelit soirées and photogenic landscapes to luxury hotels and blissful calm, when it comes to romance, Jersey will steal your heart. Find more details at jersey.com/feel and click here for a chance to win an autumn escape.
