Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. If you're looking for an escape from the rat race you can't get much further than The Lake, a well-named glamping site in the very heart of Bodmin Moor. Comprising just one unit of accommodation on the shore of a moody, flooded quarry surrounded by heather-clad limestone hills, this tiny haven is the very definition of 'secluded'. As if the setting weren't enough, the accommodation is as ingenious as it is comfortable – a converted shipping container that has been stylishly refurbished into a solid yet luxurious home-from-home.
Inside there's a fitted kitchenette, a double bed and a dining area, while a humungous glass sliding front door looks out over the waters beyond, framing the dramatic view like landscape painting straight out of the National Gallery. Around the rear of the container two smaller, compartments provide a toilet and bathroom, while out to the front there's a fire bowl and a wooden jetty with a small rowing boat.
This is a place for those seeking simple solitude. Don't expect an easy walk to the pub – the closest one is around six miles away, the nearest shop further still – but guests arrive to a small welcome pack of essentials and (given it can only be reached by car) you can stock up en route before you arrive. One thing is for sure: once here, you won’t be in a rush to leave. The lake itself absorbs your time – you can stroll around its edge, climb the quarry-made hills and watch for wildlife among the heather. By night, the depth and darkness of the skies are truly unbeatable, and all the better when enjoyed around a campfire.
