Reckoned in some quarters to be the world’s fourth funkiest town, and long-established as one of Yorkshire’s most popular hangouts for arty folk and writers, it’s natural that Hebden Bridge should host its own arts and literary festival every year. Running from 24 June to 3 July, and now in its 23rd year, it usually attracts a decent bunch of authors and performers from around the country, as well as hosting an array of exhibitions on local themes. It’s a great time to be in what is, by any standards, a very cool town, bursting with both local pride and creativity.
There’s no better place to take the weight off than this fabulous café and record store, which local record enthusiast Sid Jones runs with charm and chattiness alongside his wife Valeen. You could spend half the day here, browsing Sid’s eclectic, intelligent tunes on one side while on the other enjoying excellent homemade cakes and very good coffee from the gleaming espresso machine. What could be better than your favourite piece of music and a slice of cornflake and treacle tart washed down with a heart-stopping macchiato, before venturing out to sample some of the festival’s more eclectic events?
