Travel: St Anton: best resort for travel by train
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.THERE are about 20 serious ski resorts in the Alps that you can reach by rail. But in many you then need a taxi or a sleigh ride to your hotel or ski lift. Step off the train in St Anton and you may not need either. A few yards in one direction lie the (admittedly expensive) central hotels, while a few more in the other direction are the main lifts towards the vast, steep ski slopes of the Valluga. Arrive here in falling snow, or under twinkling stars, and stroll into the Hotel Post, and you may give up airports for ever.
PLUS POINTS Vast areas of off-piste skiing. Extensive piste skiing. Good snow record and snow-making facilities. Lively at night. For keen skiers. Resort is characterful and attractive. Easy access by road as well as rail.
MINUS POINTS Mainly south- facing. For an Austrian resort, lacking charm. Prone to lift queues. Nursery slopes not ideal.
