ALFORD The Alford Oyez: The First Town Criers' Competition in Lincolnshire The resident host town crier of the Alford competition, Ted Davy, has gathered more than 15 town criers (all of them champions or former champions) in the town today to prepare for the event tomorrow, which starts at 10am. Spectators will also be able to look over a stagecoach lent by the Royal Mail, miniature agricultural machinery, and a working windmill in the village. OSSETT World Coal Carrying Championships In 1963 two men had an argument which led to the first 'race' with a sack of coal on their backs; it has since grown into an annual charity event, including a women's race Easter Monday. Sacks of coal are delivered to the town at 10am and the weight of each is checked to prevent cheating.
