OSSETT World Coal Carrying Championships In 1963 two men had an argument which led to the first 'race' with a sack of coal on their backs; it has since grown into an annual charity event, including a women's race Easter Monday. Sacks of coal are delivered to the town at 10am and the weight of each is checked to prevent cheating.
