ARMED policemen or people posing as policemen are responsible for part of the growing crime wave in Tanzania, warns the Foreign Office. 'Although Tanzania remains generally safe for visitors, there has been a growing number of robberies, sometimes with violence,' says the FO's Travel Advice Unit (071-270 4129). 'Attacks on campers in isolated areas parks have also occurred, and travellers are advised to stay near lodges or at official campsites. Theft is common on public transport.'

Visitors are also warned to respect Muslim sensibilities, particularly in Zanzibar.
