NEXT YEAR will be a record year for package holidays, says Lunn Poly, Britain's biggest high-street chain. But the forecast, based on bookings received, could prove over-
optimistic. The major operators and travel agencies encouraged early bookings with a wide range of special offers and incentives; many people have simply moved their bookings forward to take advantage of the bargains.
The Lunn Poly analysis shows that Spain is still the main destination, attracting 60 per cent of business, followed by Greece with 13 per cent, the US with 6 per cent,
Cyprus with 4 per cent and Portugal with 3 per cent.
The Pickfords Travel and Hogg Robinson chains, both owned by Airtours, claim that the well-publicised troubles in Florida will cut British business to the state by up to half next summer.
