Fares to Australia fall from next month, when airlines cut prices for the April to June low season. For travel after 15 April, Austravel (0171- 734 7755) has a fare of £669 to Sydney from any of 19 UK airports. These connect at Amsterdam with the KLM flight to Singapore and onwards to Australia.

Any of Australia's big cities are available on the deals from Quest Worldwide (0181-547 3322) using Garuda Indonesia for £585 or Qantas for £731. Both fares allow a choice of stopovers, including Bali, Bangkok and Singapore. Quest Worldwide's fare of £609 on Japan Airlines is matched by Bridge The World (0171-911 0900). This ticket takes you from Heathrow to Sydney, Brisbane or Cairns, and includes a free one-night stopover in Tokyo or Osaka on the return leg. Campus Travel (0171-730 8111) is offering a fare of £562 for direct flights from Heathrow to Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth or Sydney, to people under 26 and students of any age.
