From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

In the Highlands, around heart-shaped Lochan na h-Achlaise on Rannoch Moor, a Scottish drone enthusiast shot some spectacular footage.

The video shows the otherworldly snow-covered mountains and frozen water of the loch.

Frigid temperatures are currently sweeping the UK, with further snowfall and ice expected towards the end of this week.

The UK had its coldest night of the winter so far last night, as the cold snap continues to cause icy conditions across the country.

Loch Glascarnoch in the Scottish Highlands was the coldest spot in Britain as temperatures plummeted to -13.6C.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic a polar vortex has seen temperatures fall to a low of -45C in some parts of the US, with the Midwest the worst affected region.

Lake Michigan, which borders Chicago, has frozen over, and people have been sharing spectacular pictures on social media.

Earlier this month, The Independent reported that Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada, has also frozen over in parts, which made for mesmerising images.
