Your support helps us to tell the story

This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Help us keep bring these critical stories to light. Your support makes all the difference.

Today: The Long Night of the Museums gets under way tonight in Berlin. Between 6pm and 2am, more than 100 galleries and cultural institutions will open late throughout the German capital, with a host of concerts, readings and performances. Tickets are €15 (lange-nacht-der-museen.de).

This week: Skate off to Switzerland for Zurich's Art on Ice event. More than 70,000 spectators are expected at the Hallenstadion for the annual figure-skating spectacular. Nightly performances start on Thursday and go on to 5 February. Mick Hucknall and Dionne Bromfield will entertain alongside the ice skaters. Tickets, Sfr68 (£47) (artonice.ch).

In the diary

The Verona in Love event takes place from 11 to 14 February in the Italian city of Romeo and Juliet's romance – scheduled to coincide with Valentine's Day. Heart-shaped lanterns and installations will light the streets, with free concerts in the Piazza dei Signori (veronainlove.it).

In Australia, The Park Hyatt Sydney reopens on 13 February after a major refurbishment. The waterfront hotel will have an expanded spa and three rooftop suites, plus refreshed rooms and work from Australian artists (sydney.park.hyatt.com).
