Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Today: Stock up on souvenirs (and stocking fillers) without even leaving the country. If you can brave the cold and battle the snow, Edinburgh is hosting an Ethical Christmas Fair in Castle Street. Running until 19 December, it comprises more than 30 exhibitors selling ethically-sourced gifts (anything from food to jewellery) from the UK and around the world ( handupmedia.co.uk/events).
This week: The Hotel Beaux Arts is opening within the JW Marriott in Miami on Wednesday, complete with refined styling and a Daniel Boulud bistro. Close to the financial district, the exclusive hotel-within-a-hotel throws in extra indulgence by way of an indoor golf school, spa, 3D media room, billiard room, virtual bowling alley and NBA-approved basketball court ( hotelbeauxartsmiami.com).
In Chicago, the Michelin-starred Longman and Eagle restaurant is adding six hipster-oriented rooms to its gourmet regional American offering on Wednesday. The design reflects the restaurant's down-to-earth ethos with exposed brick walls and retro leanings ( longmanandeagle.com). And on Thursday, Zurich gets an added festive glow when hundreds of candles are released on to the River Limmat for the Lichterschwimmen event ( zuerich.com).
In the diary: Low-cost airline Air Asia is launching a new route from its hub in Kuala Lumpur to Christchurch on the South Island of New Zealand from 1 April next year. Four flights per week will connect in KL with the carrier's existing six-a-week service between Stansted and the Malaysian capital ( airasia.com).
