Rock the boat
The Southampton Boat Show takes place from 11-20 September and advance tickets, £13, are now on sale (under-16s free). There'll be the chance to take a ride on a round-the-world Ocean Race Yacht in the Solent (£54), stand-up paddleboarding experiences for eight-16 year olds plus free try-a-boat sessions.
Coast along
The Cumbria Day Ranger ticket offers unlimited travel on the spectacular Cumbrian Coast railway between Carlisle and Carnforth – plus a great deal more, including north to Dumfries, south-west to Skipton and south as far as Preston. Railcard discounts can reduce the £41.50 adult fare.
Ray bands
Stay safe in the sun with Smart Sun's UV detecting wristbands. The single-use bracelets measure your exposure to UVA/UVB radiation changing colour when it's time to reapply sun screen or avoid the sun completely. £4.99 for five bands.
Gone fishing
The 40th anniversary of Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant is being marked with an anniversary break: a night's dinner plus bed and breakfast at the Restaurant for two (from £334 with a copy of the 40th anniversary recipe book). Rick will also be at the Seafood School on 30 July to discuss his new book, From Venice to Istanbul, £85 with food.
Wheely fun
A new book, Caravan: A Great British Love Story attempts to celebrate the classic motorhome. Photographs capturing caravan life, from Brean Sands in Somerset to the Beadnell Bay area in Northumberland. The book also features many of the owners, plus the contents of their fridges and their pets (£12.99).

Top view
Some of Dorset's most dramatic scenery will soon be accessible on open-top buses every hour. First Wessex bus No 505 already runs between Weymouth seafront and Portland Bill, but from 28 June to the end of August the frequency will double, offering more chances for Chesil Beach views.
Sand sweep
July is Make Holidays Greener Month. As part of the campaign, beach-goers are being asked to keep the seaside plastic-free. The Marine Conservation Society lists beach-cleans that the public can attend this month (mcsuk.org).
Welsh plates
Chef James Sommerin is to unveil nine bedrooms at his critically acclaimed restaurant in Penarth, five of which will have views of the town's Art Deco Pavilion Pier. His menus use local ingredients such as grey mullet with broccoli and Welsh venison with beetroot, savoy cabbage and port. Doubles from £150, B&B.
