Something To Declare: East Germany; Boston; measles
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Once the World Cup is over, Germany reverts to its role as Europe's prime cultural destination. In September, you can spend a week exploring Berlin (above), Potsdam and Dresden. Martin Randall Travel (020-8742 3355; www.martinrandall.com) has a group trip leaving on 8 September led by Dr Jarl Kremeier. It explores the artistic gems of the former Saxon capital and present German capital. The £1,620 cost includes BA flights from London, four- and five-star hotels, admission fees, transport and most meals.
Bargain of the week: budget beds in Boston
Hostelling International's Fenway Hostel in Boston has re-opened for the summer, with beds in triple rooms from $30 (£17). Book through www.hostelbookers.com.
Warning of the week: a jab before you fly?
Venezuela is experiencing an outbreak of measles. The Foreign Office warns that some visitors to the country are being inoculated when they turn up at Caracas airport for their homeward flight. "Travel with documentary evidence of any previous inoculations," the Foreign Office advises.
