This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Q I’m getting some good prices for a late-season trip to Side in Turkey. Would you go?

Colin Briggs

A Yes, I would be delighted to take advantage of the extremely good deals for holidays in Turkey towards the end of the summer season. The country’s beaches, in Side and elsewhere, will be largely empty, and the Mediterranean will still be warm.

I’m assuming you’re concerned about security, given the dreadful series of terrorist attacks over the past year – and warnings of more to come.

I can’t say that any destination is safe, and the risks in Turkey are heightened because of the vows by terrorists to attack tourist resorts.

Even so, my view is that tourist areas in Turkey, in common with almost everywhere else on the planet, have a tolerably low level of danger. The UK Foreign Office, like its counterparts elsewhere, shares that opinion, so long as you stick to mainstream tourist destinations.
