From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

What do hand-painted Italian frescoes, hanging baskets, a segment of the Berlin Wall and a seat warmer have in common? Answer: they are all among the features to be found in the contender list for the title America's best restroom, released August 1.

The organizers of this rather unconventional prize are now asking fans to vote for their favorites to determine which of the top ten will take the gong, now in its tenth year.

Among the finalists is the bathroom at Castello di Amorosa Winery in California, which features sinks makes from travertine imported from Tuscany and frescoes adorning the walls.

Those at the Snowbasin Ski Resort, meanwhile, feature chandeliers crafted from bronze and crystal, with inlaid African Anegre wood and Italian Carrera marble, while those in the Ninja New York Diner are kitted out with sprays, seat warmers and a blow dryer.

Incredibly, the restrooms at Main Street Station Casino in Las Vegas use a graffiti-covered segment of the Berlin wall, upon which are mounted urinals - an unconventional use of a historical artifact, but one which caught the judges' eyes nonetheless.

Members of the public have until September 19 to vote for their favorite, with winners to be announced in the fall.

Last year's winner was Fountain on Locust Ice Cream Parlor in St Louis, Missouri, which features hand-painted murals, ornate fixtures and designer mirrors.
