You can travel on any of the company's services after 9am from Monday to Friday, or at all times at weekends. For any three days in a week, the fare is £49; seven consecutive days costs £64. To compare, a Saver return from Chester to Oxford is £47.20.

The year's best maritime deal is, sadly, for students only: £10 return from Harwich to Esbjerg in Denmark or Cuxhaven in Germany, including a berth in a cabin – and you can take a bike for free. You must book at least three weeks in advance on 08705 333 000, and travel between October and December. Travel on Fridays or Saturdays incurs a weekend supplement.

A plane

Competition between the UK and Paris has grown since easyJet (0870 600 0000, www.easyJet.com) began flying from Luton to Charles de Gaulle. The no-frills airline has cut prices on the last flight of the day out and first one in; test bookings for August show fares of under £30 return for midweek trips.
