Cruise to Antarctica or fly to Istanbul: Travel Deals
Where to go and what to see
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Now... Escape to Barcelona
Usually fares on low-cost airlines rise very steeply before departure, but at this time of year you can still find bargains with a few days to go. Ryanair is selling return flights from Manchester to Barcelona on 30 September, flying back three days later, for £87. ryanair.com
Soon... Antarctica for less
November and December are prime time for cruises to Antarctica, but Discover The World is selling cut-price passages. A 12-day Classic Antarctica voyage, which also visits the South Shetland Islands, costs £2,630 per person, excluding flights. discover-the-world.co.uk
Later... The dark side of the Faroes
On 20 March next year, a total eclipse will be visible in parts of the far North Atlantic. The Faroe Islands are prime territory, and local shipping line Smyril has a voyage to ensure eclipse hunters have the maximum chance to see it. A berth in a shared cabin is €949 (£800). smyrilline.com
Deals of the week
Less than £200... Fly to Istanbul
Visit the city on the cusp of Asia at a price that's rarely seen. Turkish airline Pegasus has a short-term sale on flights from Stansted to Istanbul between 11 November 2014 and 28 March 2015. A return trip in March will cost £80 if you book before 26 September. flypgs.com
Less than £500... A week in the sun on Madeira
Even in early October, Madeira's southerly latitude means that the island has warm weather. Flying from Birmingham on 6 October, you can spend a week in an apartment at the four-star Four Views Monumental self-catering property for £370 per person. thomascook.com
Less than £1,000... Head Down Under via Indonesia
One reason Garuda Indonesia restarted flights from Gatwick to Jakarta this month is to tap into the busy UK-Australia market. The airline has London-Sydney fares of £911 return for travel in October, with a possible stopover on the island of Java. garuda-indonesia.com
