It’s quite possible that tens of thousands of Brits are making their way home today, travel plans ruined, and vowing never to leave the ash-free safety of their homes again. But that would be a pity, because there are plenty of late deals out there which offer the chance to take a holiday without relying on volcano-plagued air travel.
Take, for example, the Isle of Wight. Wight Locations ( www.wightlocations.co.uk) has last-minute availability from this weekend at 2 Portview, situated on The Explanade in Seaview. It accommodates up to five guests and is available from 23 April to 7 May from £545 for a week’s stay.
Alternatively, head to the tiny fishing village of Portloe on Cornwall’s south coast. The boutique Lugger Hotel ( www.luggerhotel.com) is offering two nights’ dinner, bed and breakfast, with a bottle of wine on arrival, and guides to the Daphne du Maurier Festival (13-22 May) for just £240. Available mid-week (Sun-Thurs) only until the end of May.
Or try visiting seven countries in 10 days. Travelmood Adventures ( www.travelmoodadventures.com) is offering its European Horizon Tour, including travel through Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland, all ferry crossings, coach transportation and B&B accommodation from a mere £629 per person, plus a £99 “compulsory food fund”. The tour is for under-35s and departs 20 and 27 May.
Flightcentre ( www.flightcentre.co.uk) has a couple of nice French breaks on offer. Three nights in Dijon, including three-star accommodation and return Eurostar tickets costs from £189 per person, based on two people sharing. (Valid for travel between 5 May and 30 June.) Alternatively, three nights in Avignon, including three star-accommodation and Eurostar costs from £265 per person. (Valid for travel between 1 June and 30 June.) Both offers end 30 April.
Inghams ( www.inghams.com) is offering seven nights in the Austrian resort of Kitzbuhel for just £658 per person. The price includes half-board four-star accommodation, travel on Eurostar and an overnight sleeper to Salzburg, as well as transfers to Kitzbuhel. Another £104 guests you all of the above, plus first-class rail travel.
Finally, Page and Moy ( www.pageandmoy.com) will take you to Italy’s Lake Garda by train. The nine-day itinerary includes excursions to Venice and Verona, plus one night half board and B&B for six nights. The tour departs on 29 May and costs from £1,099 per person.
