Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. We’ll have no mention of BA strikes here. Instead, today we’ll start things off with a couple of festive breaks using alternative carriers.
Destinology ( destinology.co.uk) is offering four nights B&B at Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai from £1,511 per person. The price includes return flights on Emirates from Heathrow – and there’ll be plenty of Christmas cheer when you arrive, despite the heat. Atlantis’s “Avenues” shopping mall has lots of retail distraction for festive shoppers, plus Rostang, The French Brasserie will be transformed into the Rostang Christmas Shoppe (ye olde spellings always do the trick) offering “decadent cookies, gingerbread men, Christmas cupcakes and mince pies”. Book by 23 December 2009 for travel between 23 and 27 December 2009.
Alternatively, and still in Dubai, Travelbag ( travelbag.co.uk) is offering a last-minute five-star Dubai Christmas break from £989 per person. Price includes bed and breakfast at the Hilton Dubai Jumeirah and flights from Heathrow with Emirates. Offer is valid for bookings before 20 December 2009 for travel on 22 December 2009.
Or why not try the Indian Ocean? Club Med ( clubmed.co.uk) is offering seven nights at La Plantation d’Albion Club Med in Mauritius from £2,838 per adult and £1,868 per child including flights, all scheduled activities, dining and drinks. This is based on 18 December 2009 departures. Call 08453 67 67 67 for more details.
It’s in no way a late deal, but ITC Classics ( itcclassics.co.uk) also has a Mauritius offer: seven nights for the price of five if you book at least 60 days in advance. A week’s half board at The Residence therefore costs £1,535 per person, including flights with Air Mauritius from Heathrow. Available for travel from 3 January to 30 September.
Ski breaks are still good value in January: Inghams ( inghams.co.uk) is offering seven nights B&B in Mayrhofen, Austria for £300.50 per person, staying at the two-star Snow Houses. Price is based on two sharing and includes return flights from Gatwick and transfers.
Or you could spend some of January in a wintery Big Apple: Hayes and Jarvis ( Hayesandjarvis.com) is offering a short break to New York for £499 per person, including three nights at the three-star New Yorker Hotel (breakfast not included) and return flights on Continental from Heathrow.
Still in the US, but just a little warmer, Jetsave ( jetsave.com) is offering a three-night room-only break at the three-star Claridge Hotel in Miami for £529 per person including Virgin Atlantic Flights from Heathrow. The hotel is just a block away from South Beach and apparently features “Miami’s largest indoor Jacuzzi”. How can you resist?
