From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Not everyone is thrilled to see Brexit Day finally come around – but Remainers can take heart from the fact that some branches of public transport are standing in solidarity with the EU.
Spotted on the London Underground this morning, one of the information boards said at the bottom: “London is Open, today and always”.
The stirring sentiment was shared by Empire editor-in-chief Terri White, who posted a picture taken from a Northern line platform alongside the caption: “This just put a bit of a lump in my throat on the tube.”
Another Twitter user shared a picture of a sign posted outside the DLR, which read: “Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, wishes you a safe and enjoyable journey.
“London is open and everyone’s welcome.
“Today, tomorrow and always.”
It comes alongside many London based organisations using social media to declare the UK capital is still very much “open”.
“London is open and always will be,” tweeted Hackney Empire, along numerous others.
Elsewhere, a message snapped in Brighton was a little more provocative.
Seen on the Portland Street bus stop information board was the message: “Boris is a LYING D***HEAD”.
London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has been vocal about his pro-remain views and support of EU citizens living in the UK.
He tweeted: “The UK may be leaving the EU today, but London remains a truly global, European city.
“We continue to be a beacon for progressive ideas, for liberal values and for decency and diversity.
“And we will continue to welcome people from around the world, regardless of the colour of their skin, the colour of their passport or the colours of their national flag.
“At a time of continuing uncertainty, I want to send a particular message to the more than one million Europeans who have decided to make our city their home.
“You are Londoners. You don’t just enrich our city economically, but socially and culturally too.
”From our food and our fashion, to our innovation and our public services, you are pivotal to our city’s success and one of the central reasons why London remains the greatest city in the world.“
