In the annual Skytrax World Airline awards, Middle Eastern carrier Qatar Airways came out on top, pushing last year’s winner Singapore Airlines into second place.
Japan’s ANA All Nippon Airways, Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific and Dubai-based Emirates rounded out the top five best airlines of 2019.
The annual awards, announced at the Paris Air Show, were voted for by more than 20 million passengers from around the world.
Of Qatar Airways’ win, group chief executive Mr Akbar Al Baker said: “It is a proud moment for the airline as our constant innovation and service standards set the benchmark in our industry.”
Skytrax also issued awards for best cabin crew, best low-cost airlines and cleanest airlines, alongside other cabin-specific and regional awards.
Singapore Airlines took the top spot for best cabin crew, followed by Indonesia’s Garuda and ANA All Nippon Airways.
AirAsia won best low-cost airline, followed by the UK’s easyJet and low-cost long-haul carrier Norwegian. Ryanair came in ninth place.
Taiwan’s EVA Air was ranked the world’s cleanest airline, followed by the two Japanese carriers: Japan Airlines and ANA All Nippon Airways.
Other winners included Air Transat as best leisure airline; ANA All Nippon Airways as the best airport services; Norwegian as best low-cost long-haul airline; Philippine Airlines as the most improved airline; and Bangkok Airways as the best regional airline.
