This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.
The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Every so often, Jack Sheldon from Jack’s Flight Club selects a flight deal from the UK for Independent readers that you can’t afford to miss. This week: return flights to the Caribbean for £269 return.
Here’s a good solution if it’s been way too long since you last saw a bit of sunshine. The price of Tui’s routes to Barbados have hit a new low, with departures from regional airports available for short-notice trips over the next few weeks.
All of Tui’s routes fly non-stop to the Caribbean in its fleet of modern 787 Dreamliners, which should make for a fairly comfortable flight even in economy. Checked bags are extra, costing £70 return: consider splitting one piece of luggage with a travel buddy to save on fees.
How to book
Head to Tui’s deal website and use its deals page to see the travel dates available for each route. Once you’ve picked your route click the orange button to add the flights to your basket and complete the booking.
