From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

A woman paid £46 for a flight to Greece – and discovered that she had the entire 189-seater plane to herself.

Karon Grieve took a selfie on board showing row after row of empty seats on the Jet2 flight from Glasgow to Crete on Sunday.

The 57-year-old from Ayrshire was told at check-in that only three people were booked on the end-of-season flight.

But the duo failed to show up meaning Karon felt like an A-lister; she was given a free meal and given the choice of any seat on the plane.

The pilot gave her a personalised commentary on the flight, addressing her over the intercom by name and pointing out which countries they were flying over. After landing in Crete, Karon didn’t have to wait in long lines for her luggage – instead she was handed her suitcase right from the plane.

She said: “When I went to the check in desk we were actually having a joke about how many people were on the flight because last year when I was away there was only eight people on the flight.

“He asked me to guess so we started this guessing game, starting at ten and working our way down. “We then got down to three as there were another two people who were booked on the flight but they didn’t end up showing up. “So as soon as I got on the flight, it was just me, the cabin crew and the pilot. "They moved me to seat number one so I had all the leg room and everything, it was fantastic.

“The pilot then came out and chatted to me before take off and throughout the flight was documenting what we were doing and where we were going.

"She would come over the tannoy saying ‘hi Karon and the girls’ telling us when to look out the window and what to look out for.

“At one point there was this incredible lightning storm so the pilot had us all watching that which was just fantastic.

“The crew were wandering around and said just to call if I needed anything. I even got a free meal which was great. They said I could run up and down the plane if I wanted, I had all the space to myself. It was so peaceful and I got a lot of work done.

“I didn’t even have to wait for my luggage, It just got handed to me when I got off the plane.

“Funnily enough, the same plane going back was booked with 189 passengers heading back home.”

Karon is enjoying the month-long holiday in Crete as she works on her upcoming romantic crime novel, A Cosy Crime.

A spokeswoman for Jet2 said: “We’re delighted Karon got to experience our VIP customer service in style.

“It is not unusual for the final outbound flight of the season to have fewer bookings than normal. We hope Karon has a fantastic time in Crete.
